The Sara Baartman Story



Sara Bartmann can be considered one of the most well-known Black woman worldwide, although the circumstances that led to her fame are more than crucial: Exhibited as the "Black Venus" in early 19th century Europe, her genitals and bottom became the center of attraction in so-called "human villages" and "freak shows". Later sold to an animal trainer and examined by a professor of comparative anatomy in search for proof of the "missing link" between animals and humans, Sara's body became the foundation for racist science. In my lecture I will sketch the story of Sara Baartman and what she means to Black women today.



Natasha A. Kelly has a PhD in Communication Studies and Sociology with her research focus on colonialism and feminism. Born and bred in the United Kingdom and raised in Germany, Natasha was the elected representative of the European Union in the Council for Integration and

Migration of the Berlin Senate (2012 – 2016). Natasha considers herself to be an “academic activist” (two important features that can be seen individually, but never separately from each other). Rooted in the Pan-African culture of her Jamaican heritage her political and academic works relate to the past, present, and future of the African Diaspora in

Germany. As an editor, author and lecturer at diverse private and state universities in Germany and Austria she uses different art forms to materialize “untouchable” phenomena like racism and sexism as demonstrated in her exhibition EDEWA ( This enables her to connect theory and practice and highlight the importance and necessity of the transfer-lines between politics, academia and society. Her dissertation titled: “Afrokultur. ‘der raum zwischen gestern und morgen’” (Unrast Verlag 2016) deals with the life and works of W. E. B. Du Bois, Audre Lorde and May Ayim, three Black knowledge workers who framed Afro-German identity.

naked bodies



We start from the notion of „bare life“ (found in Giorgio Agambens work) and the naked body. Life as such appears to us divided into bios and zoè, political qualified and pure life, public and private, vegetative life and life in relation to others. In art „nakedness“ and „nudity“ seem to expose a similar problem. In the context of political appropriation of body images they appear ambivalent. They show fragility and vulnerability at the same time as they are in a state of extreme political power. The „risky situation“ of being naked and exposed in public seems to touch a core point of actual capitalistic production of cultural images. On the one hand being able to risk one’s life goes along with the idea of entrepreneurship that functions on the basis of society and stands for sovereignty and control. On the other hand it makes visible the precarity of all established systems around it. The environment of the naked body is the state of exception. At any moment the threat of loss of any juristic shelter of a body produces precarity functioning as an organizational practice of governmentality. What could be the capabilities of naked bodies in actual movement and resistance? Are naked bodies potent of producing images of equality? Are naked bodies resisting being crystallized in images? I would like to invite you to articulate and mediate a feminist approach of bodily research and bodily work while taking off our clothes.

kind of like a drag show




This lecture will be kind of like a drag show. Do you like drag shows? Do you like being surrounded by people, laughing, sweating, breathing, drinking, shining people? Sometimes we are so focused on the turmoil, the academia, the monotony of life and we forget to unplug and take a look around. This lecture will be about unplugging, taking a look around, and saying, "Thank you for being here" to the person next you. There will most likely be nudity, as well...because, you know, it's a drag show.







PANSY is the illegitimate child of an very famous drag queen in San Francisco whose name is withheld for legal reasons. Tired of turning tricks in the back alleys of the Tenderloin, PANSY jumped ship to Berlin at the tender age of 18 with only a few dollars in her cleavage and a whole lot of lust for life. She is the director of the YO! SISSY Music Festival, Germany's international queer music festival. She also hosts regular weekly and monthly drag shows, concerts, and activist events like "Let's Talk about Sex and Drugs" at places like SO36, Monster Ronson's, Südblock, and many more in Berlin. She has taken her sex work all across the United States, Western Europe, and Australia.
